"Cane River Creole Soul" is more than a collection of songs.
It is an act of remembrance, preservation, and love.
This project is my personal journey back home to the heart of Cane River,
where I was born and raised along the beautiful bayou of Isle Brevelle in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.
It is a tribute to the people, places, and stories that shaped my identity and continue to live within me.
For generations, thousands of people have lived along thirty miles of Cane River, connected by a rich
tapestry of family ties, faith, traditions, and shared experiences.
We are known as Cane River Creoles.
Though our individual stories are unique, our roots are deeply intertwined.
Many of us are connected by blood, and all of us are connected by culture.
Each song in this project is inspired by a personal memory, a family story, or a lived experience.
These songs are snapshots of life on the banks of the bayou—stories of joy, resilience, hardship,
celebration, faith, and enduring love.
They are songs about ordinary people whose extraordinary lives helped build a remarkable community.
This work honors the descendants of formerly enslaved people whose labor, sacrifices, and perseverance
created a foundation upon which generations have stood.
Their stories deserve to be preserved, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.
Too often, their voices have been overlooked, minimized, or forgotten.
This project seeks to ensure they are heard.
"Cane River Creole Soul" is my contribution to preserving our collective memory.
It is an offering to my ancestors, my family, my community, and those who will come after us.
It is a declaration that our history matters.
I want future generations to understand that Creole is not a color.
Creole is a culture. It is a way of life rooted in history, family, spirituality, language, music, food, land,
and an unwavering sense of belonging.
This project is also a celebration of legacy—my own and that of the people who came before me.
I want our children and grandchildren to know where they come from, to walk proudly in their identity,
and to recognize the strength that lives within their lineage.
Every song is a love letter to Cane River.
Every lyric is a footprint left upon the bayou.
Every melody is an echo of the voices that came before us.
I am a Cane River Creole.
I carry the stories of my ancestors within me.
Their journey is my journey.
Their legacy is my legacy.
Their soul is my soul.
We matter.
Our stories matter.
Our history deserves to be honored.
